For years, Engel lived with left shoulder pain that gradually became part of his daily life. What started as discomfort eventually turned into a limitation that affected how he moved, worked, and enjoyed everyday activities.
When he first came to Horizon Integrative Medicine, he was dealing with significant shoulder impingement and pain. Raising his arm had become one of his biggest challenges. He could only lift it to about chest level before the pain became severe. Anything higher felt nearly impossible.
Like many patients, Engel had learned to work around the problem. He adjusted how he moved, avoided certain activities, and accepted that his shoulder simply wasn’t functioning the way it used to. After years of dealing with the issue, he wasn’t sure if meaningful improvement was even possible.
What ultimately brought him to our clinic was a recommendation from a friend who had been a patient of ours. After hearing about their experience, Engel decided it was worth coming in for a consultation to see if there was another option.
Taking the First Step
During his consultation, we discussed his symptoms, limitations, and goals. It was clear that the shoulder was not functioning properly and that several muscles responsible for stabilizing and moving the joint were not activating the way they should.
After reviewing his case, Engel decided to move forward with treatment.
Research has explored the use of dry needling and acupuncture for shoulder pain and limited mobility. A study published through PubMed Central discusses how dry needling may help improve shoulder function and reduce discomfort in individuals dealing with subacromial shoulder conditions.
One of the most memorable moments happened during his very first visit.
Using dry needling to help activate the muscles surrounding his shoulder, we immediately began addressing some of the dysfunction contributing to his restricted movement. After treatment, Engel was able to raise his arm above his head for the first time in years.
The movement was not completely pain free, but the difference was undeniable. The severe pain that once stopped him from lifting his arm had significantly decreased, and he was able to move through a range of motion that previously felt impossible.
Building on Early Progress
That first breakthrough gave Engel hope, but it was only the beginning.
As treatment continued, we focused on improving muscle activation, reducing tension, and helping the shoulder move more efficiently. The goal was not simply to provide temporary relief but to improve how the joint functioned over the long term.
Over time, his pain continued to decrease. Activities that once caused discomfort became easier, and his confidence in using his shoulder began to return.
By the end of his treatment plan, the change was remarkable.
His pain had become minimal, and on many days he felt no pain at all. Even when symptoms were present, they rarely exceeded a one or two out of ten pain level.
Maintaining the Results
Today, Engel continues with maintenance care to help keep his shoulder functioning well and prevent it from returning to where it once was.
One of the biggest frustrations before treatment was not being able to spend quality time with his son the way he wanted. Engel enjoyed helping train him for football, but even simple movements like throwing a football became difficult because of the pain and limitation in his shoulder. Over time, he found himself avoiding activities that he once looked forward to.
Now, that has changed.
He is able to throw the football with his son again without worrying about the severe pain that used to stop him. What once felt impossible has become part of his routine again.
In addition to being more active with his family, Engel has returned to the gym and is exercising with far more confidence. He no longer has to constantly think about his shoulder before lifting weights or participating in activities he enjoys.
What was once a daily limitation has become something that rarely crosses his mind.
Engel’s story is a reminder that even when pain has been present for years, the body is often capable of far more improvement than people expect. Sometimes all it takes is identifying the right problem and applying the right approach.
At Horizon Integrative Medicine, my goal is to help patients restore movement, reduce pain, and regain confidence in their bodies so they can return to the activities that matter most.
