Neck pain can begin as something manageable, but over time it can develop into a condition that affects nearly every part of daily life. For Richard, what started as discomfort became a constant issue that interfered with his ability to work, drive, and even enjoy the activities he loved.
When he first came to Horizon Integrative Medicine, he had been dealing with severe neck pain caused by a bulging disc in his cervical spine. The pain did not stay in one place. It would radiate from his neck into his shoulders and down into his fingers, bringing numbness along with it.
This type of pain can be especially frustrating because it does not only affect movement. It also affects how the body feels at rest. For Richard, even sitting or trying to relax became uncomfortable.
When Pain Begins to Limit Everyday Function
One of the biggest challenges Richard faced was how much his symptoms were interfering with his routine. Driving for long periods became difficult, and his ability to focus at work was being affected. The numbness in his fingers added another layer of concern, making simple tasks feel uncertain.
Outside of work, there was something else that mattered to him. Richard loved riding his motorcycle. It was something he genuinely enjoyed and looked forward to. Over time, however, the pain became so severe that even holding onto the handlebars would trigger discomfort and numbness in his hands. Eventually, he stopped riding altogether.
Before coming to the clinic, Richard had already tried different approaches in search of relief. He used a TENS unit and received chiropractic care, but neither provided the level of improvement he was hoping for.
By the time he found us, he was still in pain and unsure if anything would truly help.
If I am being honest, many patients come to us after trying multiple options without success. It is common for them to feel hesitant at first. Richard was no different. He had already invested time and effort into other treatments, so it was understandable that he approached care cautiously.
Understanding What Was Driving His Symptoms
During his initial visits, my focus was to understand how the bulging disc and surrounding structures were contributing to his pain pattern. When a disc in the cervical spine is involved, it can place pressure on nearby nerves, which is what often leads to radiating pain and numbness.
Research has explored the use of acupuncture for neck pain conditions and nerve-related pain. A study published through the National Institutes of Health discusses how acupuncture may support patients experiencing neck pain and related symptoms.
I worked on addressing the areas of tension and restriction that were placing stress on his neck and shoulders. This included a combination of acupuncture and dry needling to target deeper muscle involvement and reduce pressure along the affected nerve pathways. By releasing trigger points and improving how the surrounding muscles were functioning, the goal was to calm the irritation and allow his body to move more freely.
This approach focuses not only on reducing pain, but also on improving how the body supports itself during everyday movement.
Noticeable Changes in His Pain and Function
As Richard continued with treatment, his progress became clear.
When he first started, he rated his pain at a seven out of ten. Over time, that level decreased to about a three. While he still experienced some discomfort, the intensity and nature of the pain had changed significantly.
The sharp, shooting sensation that once traveled down his arm became more localized between the neck and shoulder. Instead of constant nerve pain, he began to feel mild soreness and tension.
The numbness in his fingers also started to improve gradually, which was an important sign that the irritation along the nerve pathway was decreasing.
Returning to Work and the Activities He Enjoys
One of the most meaningful improvements for Richard was how his condition affected his ability to work. Before starting care, his pain made it difficult to stay focused and comfortable for extended periods.
Now, he is able to work for longer stretches without the same level of discomfort. At the end of the day, he may feel some soreness, but he describes it as similar to how the body feels after a good workout. It is no longer the sharp, limiting pain that once disrupted his routine.
Even more importantly, he has been able to return to riding his motorcycle. What once caused severe pain and forced him to stop is now something he can enjoy again. He rides with more comfort and confidence, and it has brought back a part of his life that he had been missing.
Moving Forward With Confidence
Richard’s story is a reminder that even when pain has been persistent and other treatments have not provided relief, improvement is still possible. When care is focused on how the body functions as a whole, it can lead to meaningful changes in both symptoms and daily performance.
At Horizon Integrative Medicine, my goal is to help patients reduce pain, restore movement, and regain confidence in their bodies so they can return to their normal routines and the activities they enjoy.
